Deep Tissue Massage
The focus of a deep tissue massage is realigning the deeper layers of muscle connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders.
Deep tissue massage therapy is therapeutic as well as corrective, and done properly should cause neither excessive pain for the client nor strain for the therapist. Working deeply does not equate with working harder or with more effort, but is the result of specific deep tissue massage techniques combined with knowledge of the different layers of the body’s soft tissues.
Deep tissue work is not just about the amount of pressure used; it’s true intention is to work on all the layers of the body’s soft tissues and particularly the structure which covers and encases them – the fascia. Injury, illness or prolonged immobility can cause fascia to become stiff, hardened or stuck to adjacent structures. This in turn causes pain, reduced mobility and impaired function.
Portions of a treatment can be uncomfortable at times with the possibility of pain, however, a good Edmonton massage therapist should always respect your pain tolerance levels, and will work with you to find a level of pressure that is comfortable for you.
Deep tissue massage is beneficial for the following conditions:
- Chronic pain
- Lower back pain
- Limited mobility
- Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury)
- Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
- Postural problems
- Muscle tension in the hamstrings, glutes, IT band, legs, quadriceps, rhomboids, upper back
- Osteoarthritis pain
- Sciatica
- Piriformis syndrome
- Tennis elbow
- Fibromyalgia
- Muscle tension or spasm
- After a workout or bodybuilding

“I’ve been going to Integrated Therapies for almost 3 years now. The location is convenient but just far enough away from Whyte Ave that it’s quiet and parking isn’t an issue. The house it’s in is very cozy and welcoming. All of the staff are friendly and caring. I have had treatments by all the massage therapists and had a good experience every time.

“I had my first massage treatment with Anne yesterday and it was so good. I trusted her assessment of what I needed and she was spot on. She was skillful, knowledgeable, intuitive, kind and wise. And I so much enjoyed being in the Centre, it’s so calming and lovely. The whole experience was a haven of warmth on a cold snowy Spring day.” Brona Hayward
